Emmanuel Chabrier – Duo de l’ouvreuse de l’Opéra-Comique et de l’employé du Bon-Marché

Duo de l’ouvreuse de l’Opéra-Comique et de l’employé du Bon-Marché (1888) [Duet of the usherette from the Opéra-Comique and the employee of Le Bon-Marché] A satirical comic duo by French composer Emmanuel Chabrier (1841-1894), with text by Paul Fuchs and Henry Lyon, composed in the wake of a tragic 1887 fire at the Opéra-Comique in Paris that killed eighty-four, including singers, dancers and usherettes. After he was acquitted, Carvalho distributed the donations and funds among all his employees, even lowly usherettes. In this song, an usherette at the Opéra-Comique has suddenly become a millionnaire as a result, and she praises Carvalho for his generosity. At the same time, her boyfriend, a draper’s assistant at the the Bon-Marché department store, sings the praises of Aristide Boucicaut (1810-1877), who owned the store. His wife Marguerite had just set up a notoriously large pension fund for Boucicaut’s employees. In the wake of tragedy, Chabrier’s
